Ability Montana

A Center of Independent Living

Ability Montana (Ability Montana) is a nonprofit and one of four Centers of Independent Living (CIL) in the state of Montana. Ability Montana’s mission is to promote independence and advocate for people living with disabilities. To do this, we stand by three values: empowerment, advocacy, and community. We aim to break down the barriers to accessibility and to empower people to live independently, whatever that looks like to them. We advocate for people living with disabilities, and for their right to a self-directed life.

About Our Programs

As with other Centers for Independent Living (CILs), we believe in the power of community and human connection and are proud of the peer-led aspect of CILs. To achieve that, we offer a variety of services and programs built around the five core pillars of independent living.

Each Center for Independent Living in the United States must provide programs and resources around these five core pillars of services.

Boston Block LLC

Historic maps and early directories reveal that this splendid business block was constructed circa 1890. Morris Auerbach, in business with Israel L. Israel and Adolph Marks during the 1890s, was the original occupant. Their Boston Clothing Company carried gentlemen’s furnished goods and advertised “One Price, Square Dealing, Plain Figures.” Upstairs were gambling and furnished rooms. During Prohibition Helena’s red light neighborhood disbursed, resurfacing in the Boston Block in 1927 when well-known madam Ida Levy located upstairs. She moved next door in 1933, and Pearl Maxwell operated the Royal Rooms in the Boston Block until 1953. The handsome building was a worthy companion to the flamboyant Novelty Block, also owned by Auerbach, which once stood several doors up to the north. The elaborately crowned twin bays of the two buildings were a downtown highlight. The cupolas of the Novelty Block today top the two kiosks on the north walking mall. The Boston Block’s handsome second story escaped the remodeling that changed its storefront. Sensitive rehabilitation during 1970s urban renewal assured this Victorian-era treasure its rightful prominence along Last Chance Gulch.

Great Divide Cyclery

At the Great Divide Cylery we’ve built a reputation in Montana as the shop to go to if you want correct bike fit. We developed that reputation over years by seeking out and applying information not readily available to the cycling market. We are one of the few, if not the only bike shop in the state, that has a fit protocol for every bike we sell.

Great Divide Cyclery

For more than 30 years, Great Divide Cyclery has provided the city of Helena with a fun, friendly atmosphere for top-notch bicycle purchasing and maintenance.

Opened in April 1984 by Eric Grove, the shop was purchased by its current owner, Daniel Barry on April Fool’s Day 2014. In 2016, Great Divide Cyclery made the official merge with its neighbor, and custom-bike-building partner shop, The Garage. “The two shops compliment each other,” Dan said. “You can’t have one without the other.”

Great Divide is a licensed Specialized and Santa Cruz dealer and stocks a wide array of fully built bicycles for riders of all ages, from 2-year-olds on up! We try not to cater to any one rider demographic, and carry full lines of kids bikes, mountain bikes, and gravel grinders to suit cyclists of all styles and sizes.

Dan has been working in bike shops since 1996 and grew up racing road bikes before he started racing mountain bikes more recently. “I love introducing people to bikes, because it’s something I love so much,” he said. Regardless of your style, there’s no doubt we’ll be able to find the perfect bike for you.

That being said, we here at Great Divide Cyclery have a big focus on community, and Helena is definitely a mountain biking town. Stop in to try out a mountain bike for yourself of the kids and start tearing it up on the South Hills trails today!

Gulch Distillers

We are Helena’s distillery, operating right on the Gulch. We take our name from the rich history of agriculture and industry in Montana’s landscape. The gulches that command the topography of Big Sky Country and influence nature, recreation, and our way of life also sheltered a clandestine history of spirits production. Our name acknowledges the tradition of spirits manufacturing here in Last Chance Gulch of Helena, Montana.

Gulch Distillers is proudly located in the former Montana Distillery and Bottling Warehouse at the the north end of Helena’s main, historic gulch, just downstream from the strike that turned a gulch into a mining camp, a mining camp that became the state capital.

Established in 2012 as Triple Divide Spirits, native Helenans Tyrrell Hibbard and Steffen Rasile purchased the distillery in 2015 to pursue a shared passion for whisky and quality spirits and a keen interest in craft cocktails. They rebranded the business to Gulch Distillers™ in September 2016.

We ferment, distill, and bottle on site, and use only Montana-grown grains in our grain-based spirits. At Gulch Distillers™ we create products that combine the state’s pioneer spirit with refined spirit production.

Helena Area Community Foundation

Dedicated to promoting worthy Helena area non-profits through grants, informational efforts and cooperative fund raising.

The Helena Area Community Foundation was created by a small group of county residents who understood the value of a permanent legacy. HACF began in December 1994 under the legal and administrative umbrella of the Montana Community Foundation (MCF) – a statewide community foundation to promote philanthropic empowerment at the local level.

The Montana Community Foundation’s history predates HACF’s formation by several years. MCF was established in the late 1980’s, and its formative years generated energy in local communities all over Montana. Ultimately, that energy resulted in the creation of nearly 90 local community foundations that virtually cover the map of Montana. MCF’s volunteers and staff, supported by significant grants form the Ford Foundation and other national foundations, worked to create and nurture many of those local community foundations.

We began with a hope that our foundation would ultimately provided a stable source of funding for the scores of non-profit organizations that serve the people of the communities that exist within our county.

Lewis and Clark Brewing Company

With a passion for home brewing and background in marketing Max Pigman purchased the Sleeping Giant Brewing Company back in 2001.  He changed the name to Lewis & Clark Brewing in 2005 and operated the brewery and tap room under the Brewhouse restaurant for about 9 years.  After looking for several years for a new location to enable the business to grow he finally found the perfect spot in the old Columbia Paint factory. The building (or complex of buildings) took over 3 years to renovate (with some of the buildings dating back to 1887) but now offers almost 4X the space for brewing operations and a unique retail space for customers to enjoy 12 beers on tap in the Tap Room.

Since the move the business has exploded now employing over 20 people and experienced growth of 107% last year. They look to grow another 60-80% this year and have added several tanks, more equipment and additional staff to increase capacity.  Cans are a big part of their growth as they now can 5 flavors (with 2 more to be added soon) and they have recently introduced their beers to the Missoula and Bozeman markets.  This growth has enabled them to spend over $100k locally in goods and services already this year and they are firm believers in supporting local Helena businesses whenever possible.

The Tap Room is a great place to try all the flavors they brew and it’s open from 2-8pm, they are just finishing the final touches on a brand-new patio (you may have seen some of the amazing murals being painted on the patio from Montana Ave) the grand opening for the patio will be August 4th and will feature live music from several bands as a fund raiser for “The Lost & Foundation”

Montago Coffee

Montago is a combination of Montana and Otago. Otago is a region in New Zealand that we fell in love with while living there for a year. It reminded us a lot of Montana’s massive alpine mountains with semi-arid grasslands in the foothills. Both lie close to 45º parallel N and S respectively which lends to similar climates, but to us it brought an immediate feeling of home. Growing up in the foothills of mountainous landscapes, we felt completely comfortable in this region even though we were on the opposite side of the world, and that’s exactly what we want our customers to feel when they walk into our space. A sense of home away from home no matter how far you’ve come.

Mosaic Architecture

MOSAIC is a continued collaboration of Montana Architects, Ben Tintinger and Jeff Downhour that began 25+ years ago.  After establishing a new practice in Helena, Montana in 1994, the firm has evolved into the design driven and community oriented studios of MOSAIC Architecture.  With a staff of ten, including five registered architects, Mosaic’s award winning, regionally grounded work includes some of Montana ‘s largest urban developments as well as very modest, small scale homes.  MOSAIC’s studio is located on the historic Last Chance Gulch in Helena, Montana.

Through a design philosophy that is centered around the idea of collaborative design, MOSAIC is committed to providing our clients with the highest quality and performance buildings.  As architects, we engage all participants in learning about a place through its history, its people and its connections and together, envision a place that defines its own character. Our ability to solve problems, coordinate and organize the project team, and provide appropriate design has been the cornerstone of delivering successful projects throughout the Northwest.

Mosaic excels at bringing teams of people together to accomplish community projects. We take great pride in our project management skills and approach to successful architecture. That success is grounded in excellent communication. To create truly responsive designs, we must listen and learn from the local culture, the people, and the surroundings of a place, both current and historical. In turn, we communicate our solutions with an understanding that we all perceive our world differently, and that our approach must respond accordingly. The result will be a great project where excellent design, function and collaboration are integral.

Narrate Church

Church, when you hear the word what comes to mind?  We think about Gathering and Scattering.  We gather on Sundays to begin conversations around topics that are relevant to you and your everyday lives. We strive to create experiences intended to engage and challenge – no matter what you believe about God, Jesus, and the Bible.

We’re honored to gather at Grandstreet Theatre in downtown Helena, located at 325 N. Park Ave. You can also learn more about The Grandstreet Theatre Company by visiting their website grandstreettheatre.com.

Sunday gathering times are at 9.00am & 10.45am.

What should you expect at a Sunday experience?  Every week we start with a handful of songs led by our excellent band of musicians. After about 15 minutes of music, one of our pastors teaches for 35 minutes and we almost always conclude with another song.  Our gatherings last for 60 minutes. Great coffee and tea are free and available to everyone in attendance.

Narrate Kids provides age-appropriate, fun and engaging experiences for infants (6 weeks old) thru 5th graders.

Scattering is born of our calling and desire to matter, to narrate God’s story to our community by the way we serve. We’re serious about being the kind of the church that exists for the benefit of its non-members… to the extent that the most ardent critic of Christianity would be bummed if we suddenly ceased to exist. We seek to make this happen both by validating the opportunity to serve people in our everyday, organic lives as well as by coming together once every month to serve on a large-scale, community-wide level.  We call these community-serving events “Scattering” opportunities.

The Windsor at Iron Front and Anchor G

The Anchor G was originally our family cattle brand. From the Anchor G to the Tatum Bar, to the idyllic Wynnewood, Oklahoma of the 1960s – we are constantly seeking to revive that spirit of independence, entrepreneurship and fierce creativity that led so many of our families west in every service we offer. We hope that working with us will inspire you to feel the beauty of the American West and the exhilaration of creating a unique experience of truly gathering with those you love –  much like our family gathered around the ranch table for generations.

The Historic Windsor Ballroom is located on the 4th floor of the original Iron Front Hotel building on Last Chance Gulch in Helena, Montana. Once touted as the best dance floor in the west, Anchor G strives everyday to live up to that reputation.
