Building Community: 1+1=1 Gallery is a contemporary fine art gallery in the heart of downtown Helena’s art district. Our mission is to build awareness of the arts in Helena by nurturing community awareness, acceptance and appreciation of visual arts. We do this by welcoming and educating many segments of the population including children, families, artists, non-artists — even folks who normally may not spend time in art galleries. We want everyone to feel comfortable viewing and learning about art.
Promoting Artists: there are so many talented, artistic people in Helena. Another part of our mission is to represent emerging and mid-career artists and provide a professional venue to exhibit their work. We have regular gatherings at our gallery (open to any artist) on topics relevant to anyone wanting to learn how to work with galleries, find their own voice, build a body of work and promote themselves as artists. We focus on local artists and artists from Montana and the Pacific Northwest.
Exhibits: 1+1=1 Gallery has 9 to 10 exhibits per year as well as a permanent gallery showing works by all artists we represent. Every exhibit opens with an evening reception at which the artists give informal gallery talks and answer questions.
Creative Education: We also provide studio sessions, classes and workshops for adults, teens and children in creative arts and life drawing. For more info about our classes, please email or call us.
Our Philosophy: Art is for everyone, no matter what your age, lifestyle, income or education level. We consider our gallery to be one piece of the Helena Cultural Scene Jigsaw Puzzle. Every puzzle piece is equally important. We strive to work with other galleries, artist studios, museums, creative businesses, downtown retail businesses and cultural organizations to build a stronger arts community in Helena. Stop by anytime! We will welcome you with a smile.
Aizada Imports is located at 426 N. Last Chance Gulch. The store features felted woolen handicrafts from the country of Kyrgyzstan. Store owner and manager, Paula Halverson has been working with women in Central Asia for over 10 years, selling at fiber arts festivals, trunk shows and special exhibitions. She chose Helena as a location for a new store. The store also showcases other Fair Trade products from around the world. One of the reasons Halverson selected Helena for her bricks and mortar store is because of the diplomatic relationship with Kyrgyzstan as part of the Partners in Peace Program with the Montana National Guard, the capital being a central location for this program.
Products in the store include slippers, hats, bags, dolls, scarves, rugs and home décor all made from wool. The stylish hats, scarves and slippers compliment the Montana lifestyle being warm, practical and yet fashionable. The topography and climate of Kyrgyzstan and Montana are identical making the fashion items suitable for our weather and the outdoor lifestyle both places share. There are also handicrafts from Mexico, Central America and Africa to choose from.
Aizada Imports also offers fiber arts products from Montana in the store as well and invites producers of wool, handmade fiber materials and finished product to bring in their fibers and crafts. They plan to create a space for felting workshops and events that are fiber related.

Walking into The General Mercantile feels like stepping back into Helena’s history. The interior of this tea and coffee house resembles a general store from the Old West, and the western storefront wouldn’t have looked out of place on the Gulch over a hundred years ago. The hissing of the vintage espresso machines and aroma of freshly ground espresso, however, would have been a little out of place back in Helena’s pioneer days. But with the newest gourmet coffees and Old West charm, you get the best of both eras at The General Mercantile. It is filled with cozy niches that are perfect places to sip a warm latte, hot cocoa, or an old-fashioned soda while playing scrabble or other board games. The Merc also sells unique cards, local crafts, novelties, candies, and gadgets. The Merc encourages you to enjoy their unique counter culture and unplug from technology in their old school environment.
The Ghost Art Gallery was established in 1974 in the historic mining district of Helena. The original gallery was small and offered mostly paintings of buildings and themes from the several surrounding ghost towns; thus the name Ghost Art.
Our framing and design area is located above the gallery in what used to be Big Dorothy’s brothel. Ghost Art Gallery has grown to 4200 square feet and specializes in western and wildlife art, featuring over 80 of Montana’s finest artists.
We carry limited edition art from the following publishers: Greenwich Workshop, Mill Pond Press, Hadley House, and Somerset House Publishing. Along with art we have the highest quality framing with certified picture framers on staff.
At the Great Divide Cylery we’ve built a reputation in Montana as the shop to go to if you want correct bike fit. We developed that reputation over years by seeking out and applying information not readily available to the cycling market. We are one of the few, if not the only bike shop in the state, that has a fit protocol for every bike we sell.
The Great Northern Carousel is a modern hand built menagerie carousel reminiscent of the splendid, turn-of-the-century carousels. Most of the 37 animals and one chariot were hand-carved by Ed Roth of Long Beach, California and hand painted by Bette Largent of Spokane, Washington. Todd Goings built the mechanism in Marion, Ohio and also built the spinning tub for the carousel. And, local artist Mary Harris created the original glass artwork depicting Helena area landmarks and scenery on the Carousel rounding boards.
Besides the traditional horses, frogs and rabbits, there are native Montana wildlife such as an antelope, a grizzly bear, a bobcat and even a cutthroat trout! Connected to the 40’ carousel is an ice cream parlor and snack bar. Plus, there is a party room to rent for any occasion imaginable such as birthdays, anniversaries or even hosting fund-raisers.
Great things keep happening at the Great Northern Town Center, anybody will tell you that! Night and day the Carousel’s awhirl, and the ice cream is just crying out to be eaten! Friends and neighbors are gathering at the Silver Star Steak Company, Last Chance Creperie or going to a movie at the Cinemark Theater.
Whatever your taste in shopping, dining, lodging, service or fun, you’ll find an extra portion here. Come help yourself! You might decide to sit down for a bite, go for a stroll down the Lewis and Clark – Montana Experience trail, learn something new at Exploration Works or spend the night at Helena’s most deluxe hotel – the Best Western Premier Great Northern Hotel. Even better, come set up shop and move in! The Great Northern Town Center – the upside of downtown. www.gntowncenter.com
